One-line description

Xalli is a roguelike deckbuilding game set in Aztec mythology, painted by hand in the style of the ancient codices.

Short description

Xalli is a roguelike deckbuilder in the Slay the Spire lineage — turn-based card combat, telegraphed enemy intents, relics and a branching map — set in Aztec mythology and painted entirely by hand in the style of the ancient codices. You bind a deck to the old lineages — Jaguar, Eagle, Cipactli, Frog, Mictlan — cook food between fights, and climb toward the gods of the Five Suns. Built phone-first for one-handed play, and on PC. English and Mexican Spanish.

The angle

The Aztec setting is almost untouched by deck builders. The games that exist — Aztech: Forgotten Gods, Aztez, Ecumene Aztec, Aztaka — are all action games, and the one nearby card game, Untraveled Lands: Chantico, is a survival-crafting expedition with a Mesoamerican backdrop rather than a game set inside the mythology. Xalli is a two-year effort: every card, enemy and event painted by hand in codex style.
